What this test is

A Lupus Panel typically combines several blood tests, such as an antinuclear antibody (ANA) test and other autoantibody or inflammation markers. It is used to look for patterns that may be associated with lupus or other connective tissue diseases. The exact set of tests can vary by laboratory and by the ordering clinician.

What it measures

  • Antinuclear antibody (ANA) — a general marker of autoimmune activity
  • Anti-double-stranded DNA (anti-dsDNA) — an antibody sometimes associated with lupus
  • Anti-Smith (anti-Sm) antibody — an antibody that may support a lupus evaluation
  • Complement proteins (C3, C4) — proteins that can be low when immune complexes are active
  • C-reactive protein (CRP) — a general marker of inflammation
  • Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) — another general marker of inflammation
  • Complete blood count (CBC) — checks blood cell counts that can be affected in autoimmune conditions

What the test involves

The panel is usually collected through a standard blood draw from a vein in the arm. In some cases, a urine sample may also be requested to check for kidney involvement.

Why it is often ordered

A clinician may order a Lupus Panel when a person has symptoms that could suggest an autoimmune condition, such as joint pain, skin rashes, or unexplained fatigue. It is also sometimes used to monitor known autoimmune disease over time.

Preparation

Preparation depends on the specific tests included in the panel, so follow the instructions provided by the collection laboratory. Some tests may require fasting or timing around medications, while others need no special preparation.

How results are reported

Results are reported as individual values for each marker in the panel, often with a qualitative interpretation such as positive, negative, or a titer. Reference ranges and reporting formats vary by laboratory, so results should be reviewed with the ordering clinician.

Before you go

  • Whether any fasting or medication timing is required for the specific tests in the panel
  • What identification and paperwork you need to bring to the collection appointment
  • How and when results will be shared with you and your clinician
