Cortisol is a hormone made by the adrenal glands that helps regulate energy, blood sugar, blood pressure, and the body's response to stress. Because cortisol normally peaks in the early morning and drops later in the day, testing it twice provides a more complete picture than a single measurement. This test is typically done on blood samples collected in the morning and again in the afternoon.
